We have a busy week at Oasis!

Algebra 2 - We have been reviewing some applied problems this week. We discussed the money, rate, distance, mixture ans solution problems. We have also spent two days taking the ACT Aspire exam.

Geometry - We have been learning how to use tangent lines, chords, arcs and inscribed angles with circles. We have also spent two days taking the ACT Aspire exam.

It is always nice to get a little help with things now and then.
Here is what is happening in math this week at Oasis Academy.

Algebra 2 - We are going to be identifying mathematical patterns and find a formula for the nth term of a sequence. Students will identify and generate arithmetic and geometric sequences.  We learn how to write and evaluate an arithmetic series.

Geometry - We start by finding the surface area of cones and pyramids. We will then find the volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids and cones. We will also find the surface area and volume of spheres.

This has to be that 'new math' they talk about. I was fortunate enough to go to the National Council of Teacher's of Mathematics convention held in San Antonio last week. I was able to collaborate with several of my peers from across the country (there were 7,000 in attendance) and enjoyed the classes offered. I want to thank Ms. Mackedon and Ms. Tisdale for letting me go. Here is what is happening at Oasis this week in math.

Algebra 2 -  Monday we did our Chapter 9 Test corrections. We we are graphing circles, ellipses and hyperbolas. Students will write equations of circles in standard form. We will identify mathematical patterns using sequence and series.

Geometry - We start the week by finishing the Chapter 10 Test and corrections. Students will recognize polyhedron and their parts, namely lines, points and planes. We will find the surface areas of prisms and cylinders.

I will be at the National Council of Teacher's of Mathematics annual convention  held in San Antonio this Wednesday and Thursday. Mr. Tisdale will be taking my classes.

Algebra 2 - We will be solving rational equations on Monday which will finish Chapter 9. Students will then take the Chapter 9 Practice Test and the Chapter 9 Test.

Geometry - Students will find the areas, sectors and segments of circles. We will use segments and area models to find probabilities of events. Students will then take the Chapter 10 Practice Test and the Chapter 10 Test.

Algebra 2 - Students will be start the week by simplifying rational expressions. We will learn how to add, subtract multiply and divide them. We will simplify complex fractions and learn they are not too 'complex'. We will learn how to solve rational equations.

Geometry - We will start by finding areas and perimeters of similar figures by using similarity ratios. We learn how to find areas of regular polygons and triangles using trigonometry. The Sine and Cosine Laws will be introduced. We then learn about the measure of central angles and arcs. We will be able to find areas of circles, sectors and segments of circles.

He is going to have to go out and find that gene or a new doctor...

3rd quarter grades are due on Thursday morning. Any missing work needs to be turned in right away.

Algebra 2 -  Algebra 2 students are starting a new chapter this week on rational functions. They will learn about inverse and joint variation. We will graph inverse variations and their translations. Students will identify properties of rational functions and graph them. We will simplify, multiply and divide rational expressions.

Geometry - Geometry students are starting a new chapter this week on area. They will learn how to find areas of parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids and kites. We will find areas of regular polygons by using their apothem and radius. Students will find perimeters and areas of similar figures.

We all need a  little courage now and then.
Here is what is happening this week in math at Oasis.

Algebra 2 - Monday we are doing the test corrections for the Chapter 8 Test we took last Friday. We will then be working on the 3rd nine-week project. It is a project on students being geological engineers.

Geometry - Monday we are doing the test corrections for the Chapter 9 Test we took last Friday. We will then be working on the 3rd nine-week project. This project has students making art using geometric rotations and lines of symmetry we studied in Chapter 9.

The end of the nine-weeks is Thursday, March 16th. Students having any missing work, quizzes or tests to retake need to get this done soon.

The sophomores take the PSAT exam this week. I hope they don't have any questions like this!

Algebra 2 - We are going to start the week by reviewing the practice PSAT we took last Thursday. Tuesday is the PSAT. Wednesday we will finish Chapter 8 by evaluating and solving natural log expressions and equations. We  will review the Chapter 8 Practice Test on Thursday to prepare for the Chapter 8 Test next week.

Geometry - We are wrapping up Chapter 9 this week. Monday we will represent translations, dilations, reflections and rotations with matrices.  We won't have class Tuesday due to the PSAT exam the sophomores are taking. Students will review the Chapter 9 Practice Test on Wednesday to prepare for the Chapter 9 Test on Thursday.

Algebra 2 - We will start the week by solving exponential and logarithmic equations. We will finish Chapter 8 by evaluating and solving natural logarithmic expressions and equations. Students will get a Chapter 8 Practice Test on Thursday to review for their Chapter 8 Test next week.

Geometry - We will learn how to represent translations, dilations, reflections and rotations by using matrices. We will how to use a composition of reflections to make new images. Students will get a Chapter 9 Practice Test on Thursday to review for their Chapter 9 Test next week.

Algebra 2 - The Algebra students finished Chapter 7 last week. We begin Chapter 8 by learning how to model exponential growth and decay. We will identify the role of the constants in the family of exponential functions. Students will write, evaluate and graph logarithmic functions. We will the properties of logarithms to simplify and expand them.

Geometry - The Geometry students finished Chapter 8 last week. We begin Chapter 9 by learning about isometries and find translation images of figures. Students will find reflection and rotation images of figures. We will also identify the different types of symmetry of figures.

Algebra 2 - We start the week by simplifying expressions with rational exponents. We will solve radical equations while watching for extraneous solutions. We will add, subtract, multiply and subtract functions. We will also be able to find the inverse of a relation and function.

Geometry - Trigonometry this week! We will use sine, cosine and tangent ratios to determine side lengths of triangles. We will use angles of elevation and depression to solve problems. We will also describe vectors and solve vector problems.

Algebra 2 - We will finish our Chapter 6 Test that we started on Thursday. We will also simplify the nth roots of radical expressions. We will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide radical expressions. We will also simplify expressions with rational exponents.

Geometry - We will use the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse. We will learn about the properties of the Special Triangles (45,45,90 and 30,60,90 degree triangles). We will find how to use the sine, cosine and tangent ratios to determine the side lengths of triangles.

Algebra 2 - We are going to use Pascal's Triangle to expand binomials. We will  review  the Chapter 6 Practice Test on Wednesday to get us ready for the Chapter 6 Test on Thursday.

Geometry - We will learn about the Side-Splitter and Triangle Bisector Theorems. We will  review  the Chapter 7 Practice Test on Wednesday to get us ready for the Chapter 7 Test on Thursday.

Welcome back! Here is what we are doing in math this week.

Algebra 2 - We are finishing Chapter 6. We will start the New Year by solving equations using the rational root theorem. We will learn how to use the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra to solve equations with complex roots. Permutations and Combinations will be explored along with n-factorial. We will learn the importance of Pascal's Triangle when using the Binomial Theorem.

Geometry - We start Chapter 7 this week by writing ratios and solving proportions. We will be able to identify similar polygons. We will use SSS, AA, or SAS similarity statements. We will be able to find and use relationships in similar right triangles.

It must be that 'new' math they have been doing.

Algebra 2 - We are getting ready to take our 1st Semester Finals on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This test is very important for their semester average. I gave the students a Practice Final last week to help study from.  We will do a little more reviewing Monday before we take the test. Any retake quizzes, tests or late homework need to be turned in this week.

Algebra 2 students will divide polynomials using long and synthetic division. The 'Remainder Theorem' is introduced to determine if one polynomial is a factor of another. We will  solve polynomial equations by factoring and graphing. Students will solve problems using the rational, irrational and imaginary root theorems. We are at the end of the 2nd nine-weeks. Students will be given a progress report on Monday and it will show any missing work that needs to be turned in and quizzes that need to be taken/retaken.  I will be giving the students the 1st Semester Practice Final. The fifty question 1st Semester Algebra 2 Final will be given on Tuesday 12/20 and Wednesday 12/21. The final is worth 20% of the students semester grade and should be taken seriously.

Here is what is happening in math during this very busy week at Oasis Academy.

Algebra 2 - We are going to finish our Chapter 5 Exam and test corrections on Monday. We  start Chapter 6 by classifying polynomials and finding cubic models. Students will analyze the factored form of a polynomial and write a polynomial function from its zeros. We will also divide polynomials using long and synthetic division.

Geometry - We will determine if a quadrilateral is a parallelogram. Students will use properties of diagonals of rhombuses and rectangles. We will verify and use properties of trapezoids and kites. Students will name coordinates of special figures by using their properties.

We won't  have to make a phone call this week. We will learn a way to memorize the quadratic equation using the tune to 'Pop Goes the Weasel'. Here is what's happening this week!

Algebra 2 - We are going to solve quadratic equations by 'completing the square'. Students will learn how to derive the 'quadratic equation' and then use it to solve equations. We take the Chapter 5 Practice Test on Wednesday and the Chapter 5 Test on Thursday.

Geometry  - Students will start by finishing the Chapter 5 Test. The nine-week project 'Design a Zoo' is due Tuesday. We will start Chapter 6 by defining and classifying special types of quadrilaterals. We will use relationships among sides and among angles of parallelograms. We will be able to determine whether a quadrilateral is a parallelogram.
